Porch Progress

With all that was going on inside, the front porch was just a way to get in and out of the house.  Even thought it was pretty gross looking, it was ignored.  That was partly due to the fact that winter set in shortly after the rebuilding of the columns and the glazed bricks on the sides were torn down and reset. It was October when the sides and columns were dismantled. Rebuild in progress. Columns went back up straight and strong. Then it was ignored until early spring when things started happening. Paint removal came first along with replacing all rotten or weak lumber. Holes were patched and all was sanded smooth. The doorways were primed and looked so much better, the decision was made to paint them a lighter color than originally planned. Next the exterior parts of the porch were addressed. The decision was made to replace the original brackets with a dentil moulding accent. Layers of paint were picked off the capitals

The End of the Bathroom Debate

Something I pondered for years is finally happening!  Nothing in my 42 years of rehabbing this house has been mulled over and debated as much as this project. Remodels were done over the years to this bath, but none really addressed all the issues.. I have blogged about this room a couple times here   and oops, I guess nowhere else.  That means I might have to check the old   photo box to give you some samples. Okay,   I found a few snapshots of this bathroom that date back to 1977. This is how it looked when I bought the house.  The toilet was in a separate room adjacent to this one.  That is the same medicine cabinet, the same sconce lights, and the same tub that remain in this bathroom until today. I gave it a cosmetic uplift with a bit of paint and wallpaper. That lasted until there was money for a more thorough update.  That was about seven years after buying the house. This time some demo was required.  The medicine chest/mirror was moved to a le

Ready To Rent

Although there are still many things to finish on the longest rehab ever, the first floor apartment is now ready for the first tenants.  The work will continue on the second story apartment and the exterior, and there will be posts as that moves along.  But for now:  A few shots of a lovely, spacious apartment. An entry large enough for a console table/cabinet. A small chair with an accent table would work as well. As you walk from the front door down the hallway you pass the door to the basement on the left. Past the arch is the bathroom door and then the laundry room entrance.  The hall opens up to the kitchen on the left and the bedroom on the right.  Between those two rooms is the original pantry cabinet shown in the photo below. Before moving on to the rest of the rooms, let's back up to show the laundry room . A peek into the bathroom shows the large linen storage cabinet. And next to that is a roomy shower. On the opposite side a 42" van
