With all that was going on inside, the front porch was just a way to get in and out of the house. Even thought it was pretty gross looking, it was ignored. That was partly due to the fact that winter set in shortly after the rebuilding of the columns and the glazed bricks on the sides were torn down and reset.
It was October when the sides and columns were dismantled.
Rebuild in progress.
Columns went back up straight and strong.
Then it was ignored until early spring when things started happening.
Paint removal came first along with replacing all rotten or weak lumber.
Holes were patched and all was sanded smooth.
The doorways were primed and looked so much better, the decision was made to paint them a lighter color than originally planned.
Next the exterior parts of the porch were addressed.
The decision was made to replace the original brackets with a dentil moulding accent.
Layers of paint were picked off the capitals and they are now awaiting a good cleaning.
The mail slots were a little ratty looking.
But a little elbow grease brought them back to life. (The smaller one took longer so was not ready for this picture)
However, you can see it in this photo just below the permit taped in the window. Also note the doorknobs and backplates. They were painted rose gold that was going to be beautiful with the original paint color for the doors. When that changed, so did the color of the knobs and plates. (yes, a little part missing on the right. The search is on.)
Not real noticeable here, but the light fixtures are also in place. You probably noticed the dark spot on the right next to the door. There is a lovely corbel that will reinstalled once the many layers of paint are carefully removed. What about the triple window? Patience. None of this happens quickly.
This is the missing piece that has been cleaned and touched up for painting.
And here it is back where it belongs.
This next picture is what held up the publishing of this post.
The wrought iron railing was being made and took a bit longer than anticipated. But in the meantime new gutters were installed on the porch and along the roof line.
The triple window is scheduled for scraping and painting next week.
And what about the back porch? That too is being worked on. Some hurdles to clear along the way.
Like the wood directly below a faulty gutter that allowed water to spill down the building for way too long.
Weather permitting I should be able to show you this porch transformed in about one week.
