Challenge 7 & 8

I won't go into great detail on these two challenges because I don't have photos to support the process and it's really not that important.

The prompts for #7 were:

1. A flower

2. A receipt with a printed logo

3. Something with metallic ink

4. Something with wings

5. Something stapled

6. A coffee or tea stain

I chose to use a tea stained bag for the background. Bonus item covered.

The second item I found was a girl with wings. Even though I had "something with wings" covered, I later added a couple butterflies just for interest.

I happened to have a small piece of translucent paper with leaves that had flecks of metallic gold. When they catch the light they are beautiful.

Next came the flower. Finding something small enough to work here was an issue. I finally settled for the purple flower although I would have preferred something with a stem.

With two prompts left, I was stymied. I did not have a receipt with a logo and even if I found something, I wasn't sure where it would fit without covering something I didn't want covered, My decision was to let the Bonus item serve as a stand-in which is legal. That left me with something stapled. I thought this over long and hard and experimented with overlapping staples to form a six pointed star but that did not go well. Aligning the staples perfectly was a disaster. So I pulled the staples out of my practice sheet and glued them randomly on the circle. Then I dabbed them with Art Alchemy Matallique in vintage gold. I took some liberties with that prompt and it probably won't be the last time I do that either.

Here is the final product. The sun was setting when I took this and I was trying to pick up the fold flecks on the leaves. Not the most polished shot. It does look much better in person but I couldn't seem to capture that on camera.

Moving on to #8, we have the prompts as follows:

1. A pattern texture that looks natural (e.g. woodgrain)

2. Something that makes a noise

3. A menu or a part of one

4. An image of a face or portrait

5. A page from a children's book

6. Bonus: Something transparent or translucent (e.g. tracing paper)

I began by looking through some children's books. There was one that was a take on nursery rhymes. I chose a weasel for the image of a face and that dominated the project.

First I chose a patterned piece for the background but that turned out to be way too busy so I flipped the circle over and used a page from the book as the background. I covered that with a slightly tinted piece of vellum to reduce the contrast between the white page and black print and, of course, to satisfy the Bonus prompt. The weasel is also meant to serve as something that makes a noise. The theme of the book was that the weasel kept popping up whenever the rest of the characters least expected it. So "POP Goes the Weasel !" was repeated throughout the story with exclamation points each time. Unfortunately I could not fit an exclamation point onto my circle. Believe me I tried. Then I took the patterned paper and cut it to fit the "O" between the two Ps. The last thing I needed was piece of a menu. Since I had used the Bonus prompt I really didn't need it but I made a feeble attempt anyway.

I cut a little cap out of the same book and put it on the weasel's head. I also colored in the heart on his overalls. I tried to up the yellow on the two Ps to show like they do in person. However that darkened the blue as well. In reality it is a gray blue.

I remembered I took a picture before I colored in the heart. This one is pretty close to the true colors on the finished piece. I took the other one way too late in the day as the sun was setting, thus the distortion with the colors.

That's it for now. I may ease off on posting this challenge and just do so when I have one I really like or think is interesting enough to warrant a post.

On The Upswing

After the last post, it seemed a good idea to do a follow up post to report that things are moving along nicely. This shot was taken before the remodel started.  The door at the end of the hallway leads into the bath now being remodeled. This is where the changes started.  The trim is off the doorway and the door opening will be enlarged to the width of the hallway. This shot taken of that same area now looks like this.  By closing the entrance from the hallway, that bathroom will now be the master bath by keeping the entrance from the bedroom only. This is how it looks from the bathroom side.  the door on the left leads to the hallway and the one on the right into the bedroom. Now it looks like this.  Part of the hallway has become part of the bathroom.  This is where the vanity will be installed.  The partial doorway you see on the right leads to the bedroom. Turning 180 degrees and looking across the room to the opposite cor...

Behind The Scenes

There is always so much that has to happen in a rehab that can't be documented as easily as progress photos or before and after shots.  Hours are spent selecting tile, choosing the perfect wall color, and even figuring out what shade of grout will make that tile sing. Then comes weighing in on the best pattern for tile layout. The internet is invaluable when searching for light fixtures, but it can also take you down the rabbit hole with the thousands of choices. This one is actually as long as it looks--48 inches.  Hopefully it looks good in place. (I know, weird looking.  It's upside down in this picture.) Speaking of getting lost scrolling through products on line, I got sidetracked for hours on one site that had 27,877 shower curtains. SERIOUSLY!!  It's easy to lose focus, Then there are faucets and shower heads to think about.  EDUCATING YOURSELF ON THIS TOPIC SHOULD BE WORTH A COUPLE  HOURS OF COLLEGE CREDIT A ...

Out of No Where

Isn't it uncanny how a project can sneak into an already crowded schedule? Recently a friend invited me to do a walk through on a two-family he was planning to buy.  A couple pieces of furniture had been left behind and they were dumpster material to him.  Did I go with him thinking there was something there for me?   NO. Was I looking for something in particular? NO.  Did the thought of finding a new project ever cross my mind? NO!  But, see for yourself.  Could you have passed this up?  It was sturdy (translates to a little heavy). There was nothing wrong with it.  It even had all the shelves and the pins that hold them in place.  And without the shelves it was not quite as heavy.  (Try telling me that as my friend and I are hauling it down a flight of stairs.)  More shelving on the side made it even more practical.  I'm sure they could be used for something besides VHS tapes. Here it is in my studio w...
