Circular Colleges 2 & 6

I finally tackled #2 of the challenge.

The prompts for this one are as follows:

 Transportation

Sheet Music

 A drawing or sketch

 Favorite book or author

 Something that starts with "R"

Bonus: A postage stamp

Unfortunate I made some amateur mistakes on this one but shite happens. I am experimenting with how I attach each item to the circle. Tissue paper, slick  surfaces, ribbon, tracing paper, delicate pieces all seem to react differently to adhesives. With some glue, once paper touches paper, it's a done deal. So if something is crooked or not exactly placed where you planned for it to land, it is stuck and so are you.

For transportation I decided on an airplane (No, not the red one, that came later.) I had another one in mind but with that one I wouldn't have had room for a sketch. I decided the best thing to do would be to sketch an airplane to cover two prompts at once. I sketched it on tracing paper to avoid a white background. I drew it with a pencil which then smeared when I added the glue.*%##  No stopping now.

My item that beings with "R" is a Rhode Island map. Once again I got ahead of myself and glued it to the row of books so they would "hold still" while I planned out the placement of the other items. I choose the white book titled Rooms because I had nothing to represent my favorite book and rooms are really my favorite thing. I love rehabbing them, painting them, furnishing them, and redecorating them again and again.

The stamp came from Stampington & Co. clip art. I chose it for the shape and the color.

So, what's with the red plane? Well, I thought the collage needed something more. I saw this in a magazine and I just went for it even though the nose was behind something else on the page. I improvised on that which didn't work out all that well but at a glance it's okay.

The only other comment I have on this one is that I purposely left as much background showing as I possible. I thought the notes added energy to the collage.

And now that I am caught up with past challenges, here is #6, the challenge for the week of February 10, 2025.

The prompts are:

Animal with fur

Text in a foreign language

A torn piece of paper

A product label or packaging

A calendar page or date square

Bonus: a ribbon or washi tape

Before I go any further, let me just say, I did this one during a siege of some pretty serious back pain and I was not as focused as I should have been on what I was doing.

The first example of that is this calendar for the year that arrived in the mail with a solicitation for a subscription to Southern Living Magazine. The branch with pink blossoms seemed too pretty to pass up as prompt #5. As you can see I started tearing out a section that I wanted to use before I took a picture of the entire calendar.

Next, I took some tissue paper with French words in cursive. I glued it to my circle and attached the rest of the items without taking a picture. Don't worry, I cut out another piece of the tissue paper and pasted it to the backside of the finished piece and took a picture of that for you.

Besides my back issues, I am also struggling with computer updates. My grandson helped me to find the editing features for the photos so I am now back in business.

The tissue paper you recognize as the background, and the calendar section I tore from the full sheet that will go edge to edge on the circle. I used two small pieces of the pink ribbon in the collage. One is on the background tissue and does not standout. The other is on the calendar so that shows better. The little packaging (ZotZ) is from a piece of hard candy. I was not very enthusiastic about that selection but I needed something quite small if I was going to show the brand name and I was not having any luck finding something better. The piece of paper with an unusual edge is a postcard with a beautiful edge but that can't really be seen in this photo. I added a strip of black paper beneath it on the collage so it is easier to see. If you check the list you will see the only prompt we haven't mentioned is the animal with fur. Any guesses? For those of you who said SLOTH, you nailed it. This is a sloth I cut from Nature's Wonder Book. (The same book that gave me the eagle for challenge #3.) This little creature was hanging upside down from a tree branch in the book and that is how I displayed him in the collage.

This closeup shows the edging from the postcard and also some of the pink ribbon.

I did outline the branches which helped the calendar section to balance better with the strong candy wrap and the sloth. Actually this one turned out better than I expected but not without some frustration along the way.

On The Upswing

After the last post, it seemed a good idea to do a follow up post to report that things are moving along nicely. This shot was taken before the remodel started.  The door at the end of the hallway leads into the bath now being remodeled. This is where the changes started.  The trim is off the doorway and the door opening will be enlarged to the width of the hallway. This shot taken of that same area now looks like this.  By closing the entrance from the hallway, that bathroom will now be the master bath by keeping the entrance from the bedroom only. This is how it looks from the bathroom side.  the door on the left leads to the hallway and the one on the right into the bedroom. Now it looks like this.  Part of the hallway has become part of the bathroom.  This is where the vanity will be installed.  The partial doorway you see on the right leads to the bedroom. Turning 180 degrees and looking across the room to the opposite cor...

Behind The Scenes

There is always so much that has to happen in a rehab that can't be documented as easily as progress photos or before and after shots.  Hours are spent selecting tile, choosing the perfect wall color, and even figuring out what shade of grout will make that tile sing. Then comes weighing in on the best pattern for tile layout. The internet is invaluable when searching for light fixtures, but it can also take you down the rabbit hole with the thousands of choices. This one is actually as long as it looks--48 inches.  Hopefully it looks good in place. (I know, weird looking.  It's upside down in this picture.) Speaking of getting lost scrolling through products on line, I got sidetracked for hours on one site that had 27,877 shower curtains. SERIOUSLY!!  It's easy to lose focus, Then there are faucets and shower heads to think about.  EDUCATING YOURSELF ON THIS TOPIC SHOULD BE WORTH A COUPLE  HOURS OF COLLEGE CREDIT A ...

Out of No Where

Isn't it uncanny how a project can sneak into an already crowded schedule? Recently a friend invited me to do a walk through on a two-family he was planning to buy.  A couple pieces of furniture had been left behind and they were dumpster material to him.  Did I go with him thinking there was something there for me?   NO. Was I looking for something in particular? NO.  Did the thought of finding a new project ever cross my mind? NO!  But, see for yourself.  Could you have passed this up?  It was sturdy (translates to a little heavy). There was nothing wrong with it.  It even had all the shelves and the pins that hold them in place.  And without the shelves it was not quite as heavy.  (Try telling me that as my friend and I are hauling it down a flight of stairs.)  More shelving on the side made it even more practical.  I'm sure they could be used for something besides VHS tapes. Here it is in my studio w...
