Full Deck and ABC Challenges

Today I have three of the Full Deck playing cards and two of the ABC challenge collages to show you.

The prompts for #13 in the Full Deck Challenge are crazy colors with black markings.

I saw another participant had used things like a blue apple for her crazy colors. That was clever. There are so many takes on interpreting the prompts and that's what makes viewing other people's cards so interesting.

Number 14 in this challenge has the simple prompts of  turquoise and staples.  I found a rustic set of double doors in a magazine that were a beautiful shade of turquoise.  However, in order to use them, they had to be cut way down and even then they covered the entire card. I decided the only way I could use them was if they opened.

I covered the back side of the doors with background paper from a magazine and stenciled them with black paint to create the lattice design. Then I added a portion of an advertisement for bathroom flooring to the card.

I actually glued the doors to the card  but because I needed to use staples, I added four staples where you would normally see hinges.

I enjoyed creating Number 15 more than the previous two. The prompt was Stack 'em up. That opened up the possibilities for just about anything and the participants took advantage of that. One person went all out by joining several cards in an accordion pleat.

I'm not one for layering on such a small card although I did discover that it is possible if it is well thought out. Just to be on the safe side I used two rubber stamps. One is of gifts stacked on top of each other and the other is the three layer cake. I embellished the gifts by coloring them with water color pencils and using embroidery thread for bows on a couple of them. I applied a gold metallic nail polish over the decorative frosting on the cake, added a paper flower and a little color to the dots.

I attempted to place the tag, "A Day to Remember," and it adhered so quickly I could not move it or remove it. This is the tricky part for me. You can plan it all out but the minute you start adding glue, things can go helter skelter.

My layering included netting on the bride's veil, two different background papers, ribbon, tissue paper, and a cut out heart.

Now for the ABC cards.

The prompts for G had me a little stumped at first but once I figured out I could cover the Gothic prompt by using a house, it took on a life of it's own. The other prompts are grid, grunge, and grit.

In the bottom left corner the light colored patch is actually a pocket. Below you will see a tintype photo has been inserted in this pocket. Because a grid is one of the prompts I covered the insect with a piece of netting to satisfy this prompt.

I cut off the top of the tintype in a jagged fashion to add to the grunge. Below is a closeup.

The cards I am using for this challenge are 6x7.5 and I do like the freedom of a slightly larger card.

The final card for this post is the letter H. Prompts are house, heron, hobby and harlequin. I went in a few directions before settling on this one. I had a great  little lighthouse and a guy on a surfboard but I just couldn't get it all to work together. I also found a beautiful heron that I tried to copy on my printer but the color on my printer was awful. I spent a lot of time trying to get a better copy at the library but the sizing was off. Finally with a little help I got that right.

However, in the end I went will the reddish one from my printer.
The tips of the pen and the H are meant to represent calligraphy that satisfies the hobby prompt

This is the heron with true colors from the library printer. I will save it for another time.

I am now caught up on all three challenges and am waiting for the next set of prompts.

On The Upswing

After the last post, it seemed a good idea to do a follow up post to report that things are moving along nicely. This shot was taken before the remodel started.  The door at the end of the hallway leads into the bath now being remodeled. This is where the changes started.  The trim is off the doorway and the door opening will be enlarged to the width of the hallway. This shot taken of that same area now looks like this.  By closing the entrance from the hallway, that bathroom will now be the master bath by keeping the entrance from the bedroom only. This is how it looks from the bathroom side.  the door on the left leads to the hallway and the one on the right into the bedroom. Now it looks like this.  Part of the hallway has become part of the bathroom.  This is where the vanity will be installed.  The partial doorway you see on the right leads to the bedroom. Turning 180 degrees and looking across the room to the opposite cor...

Behind The Scenes

There is always so much that has to happen in a rehab that can't be documented as easily as progress photos or before and after shots.  Hours are spent selecting tile, choosing the perfect wall color, and even figuring out what shade of grout will make that tile sing. Then comes weighing in on the best pattern for tile layout. The internet is invaluable when searching for light fixtures, but it can also take you down the rabbit hole with the thousands of choices. This one is actually as long as it looks--48 inches.  Hopefully it looks good in place. (I know, weird looking.  It's upside down in this picture.) Speaking of getting lost scrolling through products on line, I got sidetracked for hours on one site that had 27,877 shower curtains. SERIOUSLY!!  It's easy to lose focus, Then there are faucets and shower heads to think about.  EDUCATING YOURSELF ON THIS TOPIC SHOULD BE WORTH A COUPLE  HOURS OF COLLEGE CREDIT A ...

Out of No Where

Isn't it uncanny how a project can sneak into an already crowded schedule? Recently a friend invited me to do a walk through on a two-family he was planning to buy.  A couple pieces of furniture had been left behind and they were dumpster material to him.  Did I go with him thinking there was something there for me?   NO. Was I looking for something in particular? NO.  Did the thought of finding a new project ever cross my mind? NO!  But, see for yourself.  Could you have passed this up?  It was sturdy (translates to a little heavy). There was nothing wrong with it.  It even had all the shelves and the pins that hold them in place.  And without the shelves it was not quite as heavy.  (Try telling me that as my friend and I are hauling it down a flight of stairs.)  More shelving on the side made it even more practical.  I'm sure they could be used for something besides VHS tapes. Here it is in my studio w...
